Five roles. If two cards share a job, one of them is a bench piece.

Starting 5 Tier List

The Starting 5 is the only lineup Build A Basketball Dynasty truly scores. Official art for a 98 OVR TEAM shows five distinct cards across PG, SG, SF, PF, and C — not a stack of the same superstar. This page ranks roles you should start together. Names rotate with packs; roles do not.

S tier — the default championship shape

Creator PG + two-way wing + floor-spacer + bump four + rebound five.

That shape wins league because the sim has someone to pass, someone to shoot, and someone to end possessions. It survives ranked because you are not a single-coverage magnet. If your packs gave you a 99 iso scorer, he is S tier as the secondary scorer, not as the entire offense.

Promo frames (Curry-style creator, Bucks 34 rolling to the rim, 99 SG vs 99 SF) are this shape with celebrity skins. Copy the geometry.

A tier — four real roles, one luxury

A tier fives are S minus one piece: maybe the Center is an 86 while everyone else is 93, or the PG scores more than they create. You can win a league here. You can hit Gold and Platinum. Diamond starts to complain.

Fix the luxury last. If four roles are real, spend packs on the missing role, not on making the 93 into a 94.

B tier — the all-scorer club

Five high overalls, three of them the same job. Team OVR looks good in the lobby and dies to any five that rebounds. This is the most common ranked trap. Break it by starting a worse overall at the empty role. The OVR planner will show a small drop that wins more games.

C tier — empty slot or meme five

Four cards. Three dunkers. A ranked queue as a joke. C tier is for league experiments and content clips, not for climbing. Fill the slot. Then talk to us.

Role cheat-sheet

RoleWhat the sim needsRed flag
CreatorStarts possessions, finds shooters0 assists in a watched game
Secondary scorerMakes the help defense payNeeds 25 shots to score 12
Wing stopperBothers the opponent’s best perimeter cardOnly exists on offense
FourScreens, bump, some spacingPure statue or pure chucker
FiveRebounds, rim, putbacksAlways spotted at the logo

If two starters share a row, demote one. Depth belongs behind the five, not on it.

How Shinies change the grid

A Shiny bump can move a B-role card into an A start if the role was already correct. A Shiny GOAT can be S in that slot even if overall was already high. It cannot turn a third creator into a Center. Deploy rules live on Shiny cards.

Building order (so the list is usable)

  1. Fill five positions with anything startable — Getting Started.
  2. Identify the duplicated role; replace it using the next pack, not a shop panic.
  3. Watch one league game.
  4. Only then chase overall.
  5. Ranked after the five looks like S or A, not after a single 99 lands.

What we will add when data exists

Named S-tier cards with dates. Until box scores pile up, treating “99 SG” as automatically startable is how B-tier clubs happen. Come back after patches listed on updates; we will freeze a named five if the same shape keeps winning public clips.

For now, if your screenshot has five different positions and five different jobs, you already beat half the lobby. That is the only S-tier secret this game has.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I start two point guards?

Only if one of them is actually playing wing stopper or spacer. Two creators and no five is B tier.

The 98 OVR TEAM art — must I copy those exact cards?

No. Copy five positions and high overalls. The names are marketing.

Where do I read position-by-position advice?
Does overall override role?

Not in ranked. A 99 duplicate still leaves a hole the opponent will attack.
