How to Play Build A Basketball Dynasty
Packs feed the lineup. The lineup feeds league and ranked. Index is the long game.
Build A Basketball Dynasty is not a dribble-timing park game. You do not green a meter to score. You collect player cards from 2010–22, lock a Starting 5, and let a sim engine play basketball that is closer to a broadcast than to a tycoon clicker. If you came from Practical Basketball or Playground Basketball, unlearn the sprint button. Your job is roster construction and when to queue.
The loop in one paragraph
Open packs → assign five cards → sim or watch league games to grow prestige and the League Champion badge → queue ranked when the five can survive other humans → dump extras into the Index. Shop and codes only exist to feed that loop. Official key art even spells it: Collect Players, Build Your Team, Upgrade & Evolve, Compete & Rank Up, Win Championships.
Lobby HUD
On spawn you should see:
- Packs / Roll — spend currency or tickets on card pulls.
- Codes — the redeem field documented in How to redeem.
- Lineup / Starting 5 — five slots, Team OVR on the frame.
- Index — collection progress toward 1,900+.
- League — PvE season and playoffs.
- Ranked — ladder from Gold to Legend (added with the August ranked badges).
- Shop — Robux packs and convenience. Optional.
If a button is missing, you are in a match camera. Back out. The gameplay video below is a full look at the live client so you can match icons to names without pausing a streamer every two seconds.
Controls (what you actually press)
Because the engine plays the sport, “controls” means menu controls:
| Action | Typical input |
|---|---|
| Move in lobby | WASD / left stick |
| Open HUD panel | Click / tap the right-side buttons |
| Confirm a pack | Click Roll / Open |
| Assign a card | Drag or tap slot → confirm |
| Start league / ranked | Mode button → Play |
| Sim speed | Match UI (watch / skip / fast) |
| Leave match | Roblox leave or in-game back |
There is no skill-move cheat sheet because you are the GM, not the ball-handler. If a patch adds manual takeovers, we will note it on updates.
Packs and the player pool
Packs roll from a pool the studio sizes at 1,900+ players spanning 2010–22. That window is why you see era stars instead of a current-season live roster. Overall numbers on cards (the promo art shows 92–99 range examples) feed Team OVR. Shinies and Shiny GOATs are upgrade layers, not a separate sport — see rarities and Shiny cards.
Open packs in batches when you can actually assign the results. Rolling 20 and leaving them in inventory does not change sim outcomes.
League versus ranked
League is the career gym. You chase a championship banner and the League Champion badge (awarded to a small slice of the player base). Depth and stamina matter across a season. Read How to win a league.
Ranked is the ladder. Badges exist for Ranked Victor plus Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Elite, and Legend (“the ultimate dynasty”). Queueing with a joke lineup wastes MMR-style progress even if the game does not use that word. Read How to climb ranked and keep the ranked checklist nearby.
Servers hold up to 25 people. You will see other GMs in the lobby; that does not mean 5v5 park. Your cards play.
Index, badges, and why you should care
The Index is not a sticker book you open once. Master Collector requires the entire list and currently shows zero awards — plan years, not a weekend. Duplicates still help if the game credits collection before you sell. How to complete the Index is the dedicated grind plan.
Other badges to know on day two: Perfect Team at 100 Team OVR, Lucky Pull on first Shiny GOAT. Neither is required to enjoy league.
A practical session template
- Redeem codes if any exist.
- Roll until the weakest Starting 5 slot is replaced.
- Play one league game watched to see if a role is broken.
- Sim or play the rest of the set.
- If Team OVR gained 2+ points, consider one ranked set.
- Dump leftover commons toward Index.
That template beats “open packs until the shop is empty.” Pair it with Getting Started if this is still day one, or with UPD1 if you are returning after the ranked patch.
You now know what every major button is for. The rest of the wiki is opinionated builds, not a second HUD lecture.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Can I control players on the court?
The core loop is pack-and-sim. You set the Starting 5 and watch or sim. It is not a park shooter.
What years are the cards from?
The official description says 1,900+ players from 2010–22, not a live 2026 NBA feed.
League or ranked first?
League. Ranked expects a complete five. See how to climb ranked.
Where do I find the Index?
Lobby HUD. Progress and duplicate rules are in How to complete the Index.
